No! Firstly, documents saved in most modern word processors easily surpass the 1 megabyte mark. Secondly, many word processor file formats cater for only one type of machine. For example, MAC users will have difficulty in viewing the Word format.

ASCII is a character and text format specified by an american organization very long ago! It consists of up to 256 different characters and nothing else. Well, its acctually a little more complicated than that, but ascii is more commonly refered to nowadays as simple text. An ascii file generaly only contains characters and line breaks, making them very small, easy to read and readily accessed for the benefit all netizens with bandwidth lagg.
Load your document into your word-processor, then go to Save as... and change the format to MS-DOS Text, ASCII Dos Text, pure text or simply ASCII. Then save! Your essays should now have the .TXT extension.
If you don't get this at all and you are in a Windows environment (Win 3.10, Win 3.11 or Win 95) the do as follows: Load your document into your word-processor, mark it all using your mouse, copy it (CTRL+C), open Notepad, paste (CTRL+V), save, choose your filename and you're done!
