Disable PICS Censorware in Netscape Communicator

• Edit your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\Yourname\prefs.js file to disable PICS. (Win)
• Edit your ~/.netscape/preferences.js file to disable PICS. (UN*X)

This is a quick and dirty hack. Sorry there's no neato web page. It's late, and I'm going to bed soon. Just incase anyone wonders, (or thinks they beat me to it), I got this thing started at around 11pm EDT on Aug 17, 1998, working in only a few minutes, and completed in less than two hours.

Steps:

• Download and install This Certificate.
  • Be sure to check Accept this certificate Authority for Certifying software developers
  • Be sure to check Warn me before sending information to sites certified by this Certificate Authority
  • Make up a random nickname (something like joe or stuff)
  • Click 'Finish.'
• Then click this page with javascript to disable PICS Censorware.
  • Be sure to grant permission for this javascript to modify your preferences.
  • You can safely discard the certificate you installed when you're done.
