On September 6th 2000, Mr Leonardo Chiariglione, the Executive Director
of the SDMI group, published an open letter to the digital community, where he invited
hackers to try to break the technologies developped by several members
of the SDMI group.
We have accepted the challenge and eventually succeeded in defeating all of the watermarking schemes that were proposed. The attacks we performed against those four schemes were fairly different in their level of precision. Two of the attacks were "random", another was "directed" and the last one was "surgical". (See attack descriptions for more details).
On this site we present an overview of the hackSDMI challenge and a detailed analysis of our surgical attack. We will add analysis of the other technologies
as soon as we manage to mount surgical attacks against them.
