Johnson-Confederates Irvin Mcdowell-Union What Happened-Confederates stopped the union assault, Union retreats to Washington. Big Picture-Somewhat of a union loss. Battle of Seven Pines Where-Just outside of Richmond Generals- John B. Magruder-Confederate George B. McClellan What Happened-Just as McClellan was about to advance on Magruder, Magruder begins a one month retreat. McClellan shortly follows. Big Picture- Johnston was badly hurt and General Lee took over Seven Day's Campaign Where- Outside of Richmond Generals-Robert E. Lee-Confederate George B. McClellan What Happened-Union took out about 20,000 confederate men, but lost 16,000. Was considered a confederate victory because McClellan retreated without taking Richmond. Big Picture-Angered by the recent war loss Lincoln orders McClellan back to Washington and places Pope in charge of the Union forces. 2nd Battle of Bull Run Where-Richmond Generals-John Pope-Union Robert E. Lee What Happened-Pope is defeated by Lee Big Picture- McClellan is again put in charge of the Union Forces Antietam Where-On the Potomac River Generals-George McClellan-Union Robert E. Lee What Happened-Confederates go on the offensive, Union loses track of them, until soldiers find a copy of Lee's war plans. McClellan meets Lee at Antietam Creek and starts an all day battle. Confederates lose 13,000 Union lose 12,000. Not clear Union victory but Lee retreated into Virginia and raised confidence in the north. Big Picture-McClellan permenatly loses control of the Union forces for allowing the confederates to retreat to Virginia. Europe will not help the south. Battle of Fredericksburg Where-Fredricksburg Generals-Ambrose E. Burnside-Union Robert E. Lee What Happened-Union was massacred. Big Picture- Hooker placed in charge of Union troops. Battle of Chancellorsville Where-Chancellorsville Generals-Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson-Confederate Joseph Hooker What Happened-Hooker tried to attack Lee from both flanks. Lee pulled the same thing and sent 30,000 men with Stonewall Jackson to attack the Union from the behind, Hooker thinking the confederates were retreating was unprepared when Lee attacked from two fronts. After days of fighting Hooker retreats in defeat. Big Picture-Jackson is shot by his own soldiers when mistaken for a union cavalrymen and has his arm amputated, he dies days later from pneumonia. Battle of Gettysburg Where-Near Gettysburg, Pennyslyvania Generals-Joseph Hooker-Union Robert E. Lee What Happened-The confederates did most of the attacking, but came out with a loss. Big Picture-Union failed again to end the war when they could have. Battle of Shiloh Where-Near the Mississippi state line at the Shiloh Church Generals-Ulysses S. Grant-Union Albert Sydney Johnston, and P.G.T. Beauregard What Happened-The battle raged all morning, and by afternoon the confederates had lost Big Picture-General Johnston was killed in this battle. Siege at Vicksburg Where-Outside of Vicksburg Mississippi Generals-John Pemberton-Confederate Ulysses S. Grant What Happened-Grant laid siege to Vicksburg for six weeks Big Picture-The confederates surrender the Mississippi River Appotomax Court House Where-Appotomax, West Virginia Generals-Ulysses S. Grant-Union Robert E. Lee What Happened-The Union attacked Richmond and as Lee retreated they followed.
