I
assume when you say that only one was over 8.5" that none were under 7.5".
Is that correct?
I
mentioned the "nick or scratch" only as something to check. Let's first
find out what is causing the problem, and then we'll make determinations as to
resolving the problem.
Perhaps Greg has had the experience of ESD being a problem, I have
not. You might want to further discuss that aspect with Greg
directly.
NOTE: Back before the chute measurement was used, I believe
that someone had tried silicone spray (e.g., Armorall) on the chute surface
to decrease friction. I'd not heard if that was a success or
not.
Sincerely,

They measured them at check-in. Only 1 was over
8.5". No amount of bending could change it. If we have alot of
them nicked or scratched, there's nothing they are going to do about it.
Greg F. suggests the possbility of electro static charge in the ballot causing
it to stick. ??

Subject: RE: Placer Ballot Box
Problems
Try me or Steve Ricke.
One possible reason is the curve in the chute is too tight.
Using a straight edge ruler, put the end of ruler against the second
crossbar and read the measurement from there to the end of the chute.
The distance should be between 7-1/2" to 8-1/2".
Also check the chute surface for nicks or scratches. The
surface should be smooth so that the edge of the ballot paper does not catch
on anything.

We are experiencing ballots leaving the AccuVote-OS and
getting stuck in the ballot path in an extraordinary number of ballot
boxes, roughly 1/3 of them in Placer. Deborah is running into this
in her small election this weekend. Ballots are getting hung up
behind the back horizontal bar, as the ballot is entering the curved
portion of the ballot chute. This is happening to too many of these
to be a coincidence. This will cause jamming during the day in too
many locations to deal with. We need to figure out what is causing
this and have 1 week to get it resolved, before delivery of ballot boxes
by drayage company. Who in McKinney should I work with on
this?
