In GEMS Race Editor I recorded the race header
and played it back, then touched the OK and got the "Failed to open the
acmStream".
Touched Play a second time and got the MCI device
prompt.
Tried as you suggested (open
programs->accessories->entertainment->soundrecorder) and saved
recording in .wav format in Sound Recorder.

One thing you
might try as a data point is open
programs->accessories->entertainment->soundrecorder and see if you
can record audio and save in either format with that. Does that
work?

I downloaded windows media player 7.1 as suggested,
changed to 22.05 khz 16 bit mono with the same "Failed to open
acmStream" result.
