The old Optec Precinct Tabulators do not have an
LCD and can only communicate with a dot matrix printer.
When a voting infraction occurs, the error message
is printed on tape, drawing attention to the poor embarrassed voter that caused
the problem.
The tape increases in length with the number of
messages so they allow the tape to hang out the back of the machine.
It sounds as though the someone thinks the
Accu-Vote operates the same way.

modifications
Larry,
Both of these requests have
been made before and have both been rejected for security
reasons.
- Cut hole to give access to the YES & NO
buttons. The reason the buttons are behind the door is to REQUIRE the
use of the key to access them so that votes cannot use them
improperly. There may be an argument for allowing access to the YES
button for processing overrides but definitely not the NO button.
- Opening in the Accu-Vote printer cover.
The original Accu-Votes had this but it was removed since is was possible
for voters to 'pull' the paper out and thereby destroy the 'audit'
information on it. Various state certifying boards were insistent this
not be possible.
